Engr. Mrs. Joanna Olutunmbi Maduka (MFR)

Since obtaining her first degree in Applied Physics from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), and a Master’s Degree in Engineering from the Trinity College, Dublin, Engr. Olu has achieved remarkable success locally and internationally which includes the following benchmarks: first Woman Fellow of the Academy of Engineering (FAEng); Chairman of Osun State Polytechnic from 2013 to 2018; female President Nigeria Academy of Engineering from 2016 to 2018; Member of the Committee of Assessors, Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), Royal Academy of Engineering UK in 2019; Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA); UN Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for Development; Implementation Committee for the Commercialization of National Electric Power Authority; Gender Renewable Energy Sources and Development Application (GRESDA); Council Member and now Life Vice President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI); founder and first President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN, from 1982 to 1989 to promote sorority among the few female engineers, and in addition to encouraging girls in the study of science and mathematics (STEM) to be able to go into engineering and other science based courses or professions; Council Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers from 1981 to 1999, and was Vice President thrice at various times; the first Female Registered Engineer by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN); the first Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers; Honorary Fellow Nigerian Institute of Science Technology; and first female Honorary Fellow, Yaba College of Technology (FYCT) among others.
Through FOTE, Engr. Olu Maduka works on initiatives in Gender Empowerment, Sustainable Energy and Environment. FOTE is a member of ENERGIA, a network of women in sustainable energy based in the Netherlands. The NGO has been involved in several projects including the substitution of firewood with renewable and alternative energy sources to combat deforestation and the depletion of the ozone layer in Ibeju Lekki community of Ogun State in 2019.
